
Queen Latifah was born to Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most famous for her involvement in political activism, acting abilities and ability to rhyme. When she was 8 years old her cousin from Islam gave her the name Latifah which translates to "delicate" as well as "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and performed for the first time in public when she performed a rendition of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was a catalyst and she kept in touch with the children and music. Mark James, a local disc jockey well-known as D.J., was invited to attend the event.
